Year 2 2025 - 2026
Welcome to Year 2 at Causeway Green Primary School
Year 2 is for children aged 6–7 and marks the final year of Key Stage 1. During this year, children continue to build on their skills in reading, writing and maths, exploring new concepts, developing stamina in their writing, and growing in confidence as independent learners. These skills help prepare them for the exciting move into Key Stage 2.
Phonics remains an important focus, alongside opportunities to apply their learning in a wide range of subjects and activities.
At the end of Year 2, our children take part in the optional national tests for reading, SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and maths. We ensure that this is a calm and low-key process – many are hardly aware that the assessments are taking place. If you’d like to find out more, please read the curriculum tests information below.
Year 2 Reading - read every day and make a note of this in your reading diary - you could be a Roarsome Reader!
In addition to your reading books, why not use the Oxford Owl e-book Library? The free eBook library has been created to help children aged 3–11 develop their reading skills at home. All the eBooks are free to use, but you will need to register or sign in at the link to read your book. Please note, the eBooks are not optimised for mobile phones and are best viewed on a computer, laptop, or tablet.

Y2 Phonics Screening Check
What is the Year 2 phonics screening check?
Your child will be given a phonics screening check in Year 1, but if they do not pass the check, they will re-take it in Year 2. The phonics screening check will find out how your child is progressing in reading. The test will be carried out informally by your child’s teacher in a one-to-one session in June. The teacher will ask your child to:
- Sound out and blend graphemes (letters representing sounds) to read simple words.
- Read phonically decodable (can be read using phonics) one-syllable and two-syllable words, for example, cat, sand, windmill.
- Read a selection of nonsense words (known as pseudo-words) to check that your child is not guessing words and can read new words.
You can find more information below and use these links to past papers on the Oxford Owl phonics screening check page.
