Welcome to Year 1 at Causeway Green Primary School

Year 1 is for children aged 5–6 and marks the start of Key Stage 1. Moving on from Reception can feel like a big step for children and their families, but at Causeway Green, we work hard to make the transition smooth, supportive and enjoyable.

In Year 1, children begin their journey through the National Curriculum, building on the strong foundations developed in Reception. While learning becomes a little more structured, play, exploration and discovery remain at the heart of our approach, helping children to stay curious, motivated and confident in their learning.

A key focus in Year 1 is learning to read through phonics. In June, children take part in the national Phonics Screening Check. You’ll find information, tips and resources here to help you understand what to expect and how you can support your child at home.

Year 1 Reading - read every day and make a note of this in your reading diary - you could be a Roarsome Reader!

In addition to your reading books, why not use the Oxford Owl e-book Library? The free eBook library has been created to help children aged 3–11 develop their reading skills at home. All the eBooks are free to use, but you will need to register or sign in at the link to read your book. Please note, the eBooks are not optimised for mobile phones and are best viewed on a computer, laptop, or tablet.

Y1 Phonics Screening Check

What is the Year 1 phonics screening check?

Your child will be given a phonics screening check in Year 1. The phonics screening check will find out how your child is progressing in reading. The test will be carried out informally by your child’s teacher in a one-to-one session in June. The teacher will ask your child to:

  1. Sound out and blend graphemes (letters representing sounds) to read simple words.
  2. Read phonically decodable (can be read using phonics) one-syllable and two-syllable words, for example, cat, sand, windmill.
  3. Read a selection of nonsense words (known as pseudo-words) to check that your child is not guessing words and can read new words.

You can find more information below and use these links to past papers on the Oxford Owl phonics screening check page.
